A Christian group will join the gathering outside the Putrajaya mosque this afternoon to protest against United States President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In a media statement today, the Association of NextGen Christians of Malaysia (Ancom) said it is joining the protest to show its support and stand in solidarity with Muslims on this issue.
“Ancom is appalled by the recent decision of Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as well as to start the process of moving the US embassy there.
“We view the decision as part of his political agenda and domestic political positioning and certainly not biblical.
“As a result, we are concerned about the devastating consequences it will have for reaching a just resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” it added.
Ancom warned that recognising Jerusalem as the capital for one group of people not only damages hope for peace between Israeli and Palestinians, but also deepens religious tension among Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
“We affirm that with respect to the situation of injustice and suffering that exists in Palestine, and the cries of both the Palestinian Christian and Muslim communities there, the integrity of the Christian faith is at stake especially when the Christian faith has been used to justify the injustice against the Palestinian people.
“We reject any use of the Bible to legitimize or support political options and positions that are based upon injustice, imposed by one person on another, or by one people on another,” it added.
Ancom said it viewed the Trump administration's move as going against long-established international consensus, codified in actions and resolutions by the United Nations general assembly and security council.
This afternoon's protest would witness the presence of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.- Mkini
