Ex-rubber tappers seek PM's help over unpaid compensation

Some 70 former rubber tappers from Padang Meha, Kedah had gathered outside Prime Minister's Office (PMO) today to seek help over an unpaid court judgement award.
The group, comprising of mostly female Malay and Indian senior citizens, gathered for almost six hours before securing a commitment from government officials to intervene.
The rubber tappers were among the 207 plaintiffs who successfully sued a plantation company which had dismissed them in 1995.
Although the company went bankrupt in 2005, the Alor Setar High Court in 2011 ruled that the company had to compensate each plaintiff with RM22,500.
According to PSM deputy secretary-general Choo Choon Kai, who accompanied the group to the PMO, the plantation company had sold the land to property developers in 1995 who then let the plantation workers go without any compensation.
"As the developer went bankrupt, they (are) seeking compensation from the liquidator of the company. However, the liquidator (has) ignored their pleas," he told Malaysiakini.
In view of this, the group has urged Putrajaya to mediate their negotiations with the liquidators.
Eventually, a high ranking Human Resource Ministry official promised to mediate a meeting between the group and the relevant parties, said Choo, before the group dispersed at about 4pm.
The meeting is scheduled for Jan 8 in Kulim.- Mkini
