The drugs totalling over 50kg and valued at RM5.6 million were found in a container.

PETALING JAYA: India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over 50kg of drugs bound for Malaysia at the Container Freight Station in Chennai.
NDTV reported that officials of the DRI’s Chennai unit inspected the consignment on Dec 15, after receiving information that an illegal substance was being smuggled to Malaysia through Chennai Port.
The officials discovered that a suspicious container held 44.2kg of methaqualone, a psychotropic substance generally used for recreational purposes.
In India, methaqualone is listed in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, which bans its export.
The container also had 5.9kg of piperonal, a substance used to produce MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine or ecstasy) inside it. The piperonal was inside two bags in the container marked as being filled with sodium bicarbonate.
Although piperonal is allowed to be exported out of India, only those who are licensed to export it may do so under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
The total value of the drugs was about 88.4 million rupees (RM5.63 million).
In a statement, the DRI also said that the person who sent the container had escaped. -FMT
