NGO brings cheer to kids with cancer

Children attending the ‘Back to School’ event, organised by Kumpulan Ibubapa dan Sokongan Anak-Anak Kanser KK3 Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL Kids) today.
KUALA LUMPUR: About 140 children with cancer today attended a “Back to School” event.
It was organised for the fifth time by Kumpulan Ibubapa dan Sokongan Anak-Anak Kanser KK3 Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL Kids).
The event, attended by nearly 600 people, was filled with performances by the children, presentation of school bags to them and a photo shoot.
FMT spoke to parents of some of the children who said the hope they held on to sometimes paid dividends and there was no greater happiness than seeing a child recover from cancer.
One of the parents, Norazizah Kassim, said such gatherings went a long way towards cheering up cancer-stricken children and their parents.
She said her son, Aminul Nasiq, 16, used to suffer from neuroblastoma (stage 4), a type of cancer that forms in certain types of nerve tissue.
“He sought treatment at the paediatric unit in HKL.
“We had to visit the unit many times over the past few months to get the treatment. Thank God, the doctors and nurses there were so helpful to us.
“Today, my son is healthy again,” she said.
The event gave strength to parents to fight on for their children stricken by cancer, said Norazizah.
“As a mother, I need all my strength to face this situation. Gatherings like this really help us parents to cope.
“No mother wants their kids to have cancer. We have to stay strong to support each other so that our children can continue on with their lives.
“I hope parents who have such sick children will take heart and give encouragement to each other.”
S Subathradevi, 45, a housewife from Raub, Pahang, said her daughter had leukaemia, a cancer of the blood cells, but it was in remission now, with no leukaemia cells found in the blood or bone any more.
“My daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was six years old. She has been going for major treatment once a year.
“The doctors say her remission is at 96%. This makes me very happy.”
Her child, S Leekashree, 11, said she was very happy to be with other children today and get her free school bag.
“I am very happy today. My mother has helped me all this while. I am very thankful.”

Well-known actress Diana Danielle Danny Beeson attended the event and took pictures with the children.
She could not hold back her tears when watching a video in tribute to some children who had passed away due to cancer.
She was teary-eyed again while delivering a short speech to the crowd.
“I feel proud to be given a chance to celebrate this day with the kids and to do whatever I can to make them happy.
“To the parents, you are strong people and I understand what it is you are going through.
“My mum also had cancer and I had to take care of her and give her support.
“I understand the hope that you hold on to dearly that your kids will get better.
“I just want to share my love with you. Be strong for the sake of your children.
“My experience has taught me to be thankful to be healthy and to always hope for the best.”

HKL Kids president Hamidah Tajudin says both children and their parents need support and encouragement.
The NGO’s president, Hamidah Tajudin, said the event was aimed at giving kids the right motivation to go back to school.
“We hope this gives them the strength to go back to school.
“The parents also need all the moral support they can get and this event is also very important for them.”
She urged those who would like to help the NGO to visit the HKL Kids Facebook page at www.facebook.com/KK3parentssupportgroup/ -FMT
