No Tsunami Threat to India After Massive 7.5 Earthquake
At least 70 people have died and hundreds were injured in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Damage to property was reported in parts of north Delhi.
HYDERABAD:  There is no tsunami threat to the country in the wake of the powerful 7.5 earthquake epicentered in Afghanistan that also shook north India and Pakistan.

At least 70 people died in Afghanistan and Pakistan and hundreds were injured.

"This earthquake happened on land part of Hindukush region in Afghanistan. Based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, tsunami threat does not exist for India," INCOIS said in a bulletin on its website.

A massive 7.5 earthquake occurred at 14.39 Indian Standard Time today in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan. Panic-stricken people rushed out of houses and buildings in north India as the tremors unleashed by the quake lasted for almost a minute.

The earthquake, with its epicentre in the Hindukush mountain range, sent ripples across several states like Jammu and Kashmir, National Capital Region (NCR), Punjab, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

In Srinagar, residents said they saw the buildings "swinging" in a scary reminder of the devastating quake of 2005.

Meanwhile, immediately following the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has asked for an urgent assessment of the situation and also offered assistance to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"Heard about strong earthquake in Afghanistan-Pakistan region whose tremors have been felt in parts of India. I pray for everyone's safety," PM Modi said on Twitter.

"I have asked for an urgent assessment and we stand ready for assistance where required, including Afghanistan & Pakistan," he added. -ndtv.com
