UMNO AGM | Respect for former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad should come to an end as he is now working against Umno, says Kedah Umno Youth chief Saiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin.
"Our sentiments and respect for Mahathir should stop when he is willing to work with political enemies, especially DAP, to wreak havoc against Umno," Saiful Hazizy said at the Umno general assembly today.
"Enough with nostalgia, what good is it if it only causes hurt," he added while debating the president's policy speech.
Mahathir (photo) had quit Umno in Feb last year in protest of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's leadership.
He is now the chairperson of Umno-splinter group Bersatu, and close allies with his former foe, DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang.
Saiful Hazizy said at its onset, many thought Bersatu and nostalgia for Mahathir would be a stumbling block for Kedah Umno.
However, he added that with commitment from Umno, victory can be achieved.
Likewise, Pagoh Wanita Umno chief Noriah Mahat claimed Bersatu has failed to make its mark in the Johor constituency.
Pagoh is the seat of Bersatu president and former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin (photo).
"The flower party (Bersatu's logo) does not have strength (in Pagoh), whereas Umno is becoming stronger and more solid," Noriah said.
Muhyiddin's journey out of Umno began when he was sacked as deputy prime minister in July 2015.
Axed alongside him was former Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Like Muhyiddin, Shafie has since formed his own party, Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) which seeks to disrupt Umno's dominance in the political field.
However, Semporna Umno information chief Ramlee Marahaban claimed Umno Sabah was not concerned about Shafie.
"He barks everywhere now, he barks at the hills but the hills do not crumble," Ramlee said.- Mkini
