Selangor Umno to rally for sultan after Zaid's 'insolence'

Selangor Umno is set to hold a "himpunan rakyat" (people's gathering) to express its support for Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
This comes after what Selangor Umno liaison committee chairperson Noh Omar believes was DAP leader Zaid Ibrahim's "insolence" in a statement the latter had made in reference to the sultan.
Zaid, yesterday, had shared a Malaysiakini story with the accompanying caption "Sultan Selangor should be careful with his words. No one is immune when country burns".
He was responding to the sultan who had stated that Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad is an angry man who will "burn the country with his anger".
In a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre today, Noh slammed Zaid (photo) for his "insolence" in coming out with such a caption.

"Zaid's statement shows how he is an outdated leader," he said.
"Today it has been proven how Zaid's statement is not only stupid and insolent, he has derhaka (committed treason) against the sultan."
Stressing that Umno will not keep mum on the matter, Noh said the rally will be held this Sunday in front of the Selangor sultan's palace in Shah Alam.
"We will urge the people of Selangor to stand firmly behind the Selangor sultan," he added.
Apart from holding the rally, a police report will also be lodged against Zaid for action to be taken under the Sedition Act, Noh confirmed.
Zaid, he said, should have told Mahathir to apologise to the sultan over his "Bugis pirate" remark.
"The same goes for the menteri besar (Azmin Ali). I see that his respect is more for Mahathir instead of the sultan."
The Selangor state government, he added, should stand firmly behind Sultan Sharafuddin (photo).

"Azmin was appointed by the sultan and not by DAP. The state government should come out with a motion not to allow Mahathir to give ceramah at the state government's premises.
"As menteri besar, he must realise the one who is protecting us is the sultan, not Mahathir or DAP. I'm disappointed that the menteri besar is taking it lightly when it comes to defending the sultan," he said.
Apart from courting Sultan Sharafuddin's wrath, Mahathir had also received brickbats from Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar over his “Bugis pirate” remark.
Mahathir later claimed that his remarks were targetted solely at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is of Bugis descent, and not the entire community. - Mkini
