Stop recycling scandal-tainted leaders, Zuraida tells Umno

Ampang MP says Malaysians deserve better quality women leaders than Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Zuraida-Kamaruddin-Shahrizat-Abdul-Jalil-umno-1PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin today scoffed at the idea of Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil contesting the Lembah Pantai seat, saying Umno should stop “recycling scandal-tainted leaders”.
The PKR Wanita chief said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had proposed that Shahrizat be given an “important post” after the 14th general election (GE14).
Saying that Shahrizat had been tarnished by the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) scandal, Zuraida asked if Umno had no other women leaders who were credible, clean and capable.
“Is Umno paving the way for Shahrizat to contest in GE14 again, and perhaps in Lembah Pantai? Is that why voters have been transferred into Lembah Pantai, and is that why the Segambut delineation is so important to Umno?” she said in a statement.
“Whether Shahrizat goes to Lembah Pantai, Pandan or even Ampang, Wanita Keadilan will be waiting for her.
“We will be demanding answers from Shahrizat on behalf of all Malaysians. Malaysia deserves better quality women leaders than her and her cohorts.”
The Lembah Pantai seat is currently held by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
Nurul Izzah won the seat in the 2008 general election, displacing Shahrizat who was a three-term Lembah Pantai MP before her shocking loss.
In 2013, Nurul Izzah successfully defended her seat against former federal territories and urban wellbeing minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin, winning by 1,847 votes.
On Wednesday, Shahrizat reportedly said Nurul Izzah was afraid of defending the Lembah Pantai seat.
However, Nurul Izzah said she welcomed Shahrizat to try and take the seat from her by contesting in Lembah Pantai.
“It would be like a meeting of ‘old flames’,” she told FMT, adding that she would defend the constituency unless the PKR leadership said otherwise. -FMT
