The men had threatened villagers with parang before riding off on stolen motorcycles.
BUTTERWORTH: An attempt by four men to steal a buffalo went awry when villagers confronted them in Tasek Gelugor here today.
The thieves, however, threatened the villagers with parang before riding off on two motorcycles belonging to the villagers.
In their haste to escape, they left behind the buffalo in a Honda Odyssey they had arrived in.
The buffalo is believed to have been tranquillised using a blowpipe.
The incident happened at Kampung Labuh Banting, 8km from here, about 11am this morning.
The buffalo had been left tied to a tree near the Kulim River by its owner. The thieves are believed to have used a blowpipe to shoot a dart to tranquilise the buffalo before shoving it into the back seat of the multi-purpose vehicle.
Their actions, however, caught the attention of the villagers who confronted them.
Police are looking for the four men after villagers lodged a report at the Kubang Semang police station.
Police believed the Honda Odyssey was likely to be a stolen vehicle.
It is learnt that a buffalo could fetch between RM6,000 and RM10,000 each. -FMT
