A Wanita Umno delegate had one question to ask fellow Umno delegates at the party’s general assembly today: “Who is not afraid of their wife?”
While debating the Umno president’s speech, Pagoh Wanita Umno chief Noriah Mahat expressed hope that the proposal for a quota of at least 30 percent female senators in the Dewan Negara will turn into reality after the next general election.
She is confident, however, that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will fulfill his promise, after reiterating the call for more women senators this week.
“Looking at his face; he is truly a nice person, handsome too. That’s why (his wife) Rosmah (Mansor) loves him.
“Some claimed that you are afraid of your wife, is this true?
“But I want to ask all of you here, are you afraid of your wife? Don’t lie!” asked Noriah to laughter and cheers from those present.
In reply, Umno deputy permanent chairperson Mohamad Aziz quipped; “I’m afraid of my wife, too!”
Rosmah, last month, refuted claims that she controls Najib.
Contrary to popular belief, Rosmah said, she is the one controlled by Najib.
Noriah in her speech also requested that more women are given ministerial and deputy ministerial posts after the election.
“I want to ask, what can women achieve? Well, they can even become the (Umno) president!” she said, to laughter from Najib and the crowd as the camera panned towards him.
“Don’t say that women can’t do it. Speak, who dares say it? Women can do it, it’s just that people don’t believe we can.
“(So) we should try and become president first,” she added.
