KUALA LUMPUR: Zaid Ibrahim may be investigated under both the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) over a tweet he sent questioning the Selangor Sultan’s criticism of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said this, adding that he was informed that a report had been lodged against the former minister.
“However, I am not aware how many reports have been lodged against Zaid. I had checked on the number of reports, but for now, I cannot reveal anything more,” Fuzi said, after attending an event at the police training centre in Cheras today.
The issue began after Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had said that the former prime minister was an “angry man” who “will burn the whole country with his anger”.
Zaid then took to Twitter in response, calling for the Malay rulers not to play politics, saying “they must know the consequences”.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia today, however, the Selangor ruler told the former Kota Baru MP to go back to Kelantan.
Meanwhile, Fuzi said he will ensure security is in place if a rally in support of the Selangor ruler is held in Shah Alam this Sunday.
Yesterday, Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar announced that the party will hold a “Himpunan rakyat, Himpunan Daulat Tuanku” (People’s rally for the sultan) to condemn an alleged slur on the state ruler.
Noh said the rally was aimed at inspiring Selangor people to rise and defend their ruler.
“At this stage we are unsure if a rally will be held or not,” Fuzi said. -FMT
