It is the prerogative of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s son Mohd Nazifuddin Mohd Najib as a private person to travel to Taiwan, said Pemantau Malaysia Baru president Lokman Noor Adam.
He was responding to critics who contrasted his aggressive campaign for Najib to be treated fairly against Nazifuddin’s overseas trip at a time when his father was charged.
“Who is the politician, me or him? It is me, so it is my job to take care of the people; he is a businessman, so his job is to enjoy his life.
“We ensure that justice is upheld, that our system (and leaders) truly practise what they preach – that ‘Malaysia Baru’ will implement the rule of law.
“At the moment, they are showing us the law of the jungle; there is no rule of law at all,” he told reporters when asked at a pro-Najib rally in Kuala Lumpur last night.
Yesterday, Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily claimed that Nazifuddin was seen gallivanting in Taipei with the local actress Celia Zhang on Thursday afternoon, a day after his father had been charged in court.
Zhang’s spokesperson reportedly told the daily that she was merely accompanying an old friend that she had known for years, and that Nazifuddin had already returned to Malaysia.
“We never discuss politics especially when this is so sensitive. Besides, he has been in business for a long time and is no longer involved in politics,” she added.
Apple Daily said Nazifuddin (photo) also told the daily through Zhang that he had a meeting in Taiwan and decided to meet a friend while he was there.
Meanwhile at yesterday’s rally, Lokman said the pictures that Apple Daily had taken of Nazifuddin and Zhang at a restaurant in the Breeze Xinyi mall near Taiwan capital’s iconic tower Taipei 101were “nothing unusual”.
In contrast, he said the allegedly compromising pictures of Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu were worse, and yet they have been elected.
He said this is a cause for concern now that Syed Saddiq and Mohamad had since been appointed as ministers, especially since Mohamad holds the defence portfolio.
Syed Saddiq had previously said “sensitive photos” had been used in an apparent bid to silence him. However, he declined to elaborate on the material, including whether the photos were of a lewd nature.
On May 3, Rizal Bakar – who claims to be from Kuala Kedah Amanah division – claimed that Mohamad had an illicit relationship with a woman and threatened to release a “sex video” if the party leadership did not respond.
In response, Amanah deputy secretary-general Ahmad Kerdee Abang Masagus said the allegations were untrue and Mohamad would take legal action against Rizal.
He said the party would also take action against Rizal for impersonating an Amanah member, as a search on the party’s membership database failed to find such a person.
Gov’t ‘built on lies’
At the rally, Lokman (photo) also said Pemantau had lodged police reports against MACC chief Shukri Abdull and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He accused Shukri of abusing his position to exact revenge upon Najib’s family members by freezing their bank accounts, which he said is indiscriminate, inhumane, and makes it difficult to raise money to pay for Najib’s bail.
Lokman said among those affected include Najib’s 10-month old grandson whose account was among those frozen, as well as Najib’s daughter Puteri Norlisa Najib who needs the frozen funds to treat her Stage IV cancer.
Najib was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and one count of abuse of power related to the former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International. He had claimed trial to all charges.
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur set bail at RM1 million, and Najib was allowed to leave after his family members managed to post half of the sum with the balance to be settled by Monday.
Lokman claimed that the absence of 1MDB-related charges show what Najib is innocent of the 1MDB scandal, and the police report against Mahathir accuses him of returning to power by lying over Najib’s alleged involvement over the matter.
He also demanded that parliament be dissolved to pave way for fresh elections as the present government is “built on lies”.
Also present among the rally of about 50 people in front of the Sogo Shopping Complex is the former Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Razlan Rafii, who heads a fundraising effort for Najib’s legal defence.
He said the fund has collected about RM230,000, and he has received many phone calls of people expressing support and sympathy for Najib.
He said he expects to be able to raise RM500,000 by Monday, when the remainder of Najib’s bail is due.
