PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the rally against a United Nations treaty on human rights has been allowed to proceed based on democratic principles.
In a two-minute YouTube video, he said the government would like to thank rally organisers if the demonstration was to thank the government for not ratifying the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
“I pray that the rally will be run smoothly without any disturbance. Let us celebrate democracy in Malaysia together,” he said.
His message is meant for Umno, PAS and NGOs, who will taking part in the mass rally in the capital city tomorrow to protest against ICERD.
Putrajaya decided that it would not ratify the treaty amid intense opposition from Malay groups and political parties who warned that the global treaty was a threat to Malaysia’s affirmative action policy.
Mahathir said the government has no plans to stop the rally as that would be violating the government policy to support democratic principles.
“The government just asks for one thing — that is for organisers to help the police and authorities ensure there is no chaos or damage to public property.
