Police are concerned that the legalisation of marijuana by the Thai government may lead to an increase in smuggling activities, according to inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
While stressing that decriminalisation of the drug was Thailand's prerogative, he said Malaysian authorities are taking pre-emptive measures to tighten security at the border.
"That was Thailand's decision. But there is the worry when this happens, there will be an increase in marijuana smuggling into our country.
"(While) this remains speculation, we are working hard to tighten border security so that there will not be a surge in smuggling – not only for marijuana but also for other drugs," he said after a mass wedding ceremony for police personnel at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
Fuzi was responding to a question on Thailand's decision to legalise the use of marijuana and ketum for medical purposes, which will come into effect next year.
When asked about the possible decriminalisation of the drug in Malaysia, Fuzi said police have discussed the matter with Putrajaya at length and remain opposed to the idea.
"The police have given our view, we disagree (to the decriminalisation of marijuana).
"Such a move would only further complicate the problem of drug addiction in this country," he said. - Mkini
