MCA slams govt over removal of funds for Chinese traders

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Wee Ka Siong today took a swipe at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government for removing the allocation meant for Chinese small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Wee said the removal of the RM50 million allocation, which was given as loans to Chinese SMEs, came as a rude shock to everyone.
“We just received news that an allocation, which was approved under Budget 2018 to help Chinese SMEs, has been cancelled.
“It was endorsed by Parliament last year, but suddenly the government issued a letter and said the allocation has been cancelled.
“This is really a rude shock,” he said on the sidelines of the MCA annual general meeting today.
Wee Ka Siong.
Wee said Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Berhad (Kojadi), a cooperative comprising over 60,000 members, had helped the previous administration.
“Every year, they would take a loan of RM50 million. They have to pay back after several years.
“Whatever administrative expenses, they cannot get it reimbursed by the government. Whatever bad debts, you have to bear.
“But suddenly, the government calls off this allocation which the previous government had promised. This is news to us.
“Shows how petty and unreasonable the current government is,” he said.
Earlier in his policy speech, Wee said in the Budget 2019, the new government had removed the RM50 million as loans for Chinese SMEs, and RM30 million, which was microcredit for Chinese hawkers and petty traders.
“Is this fair for the Chinese community, who are also taxpayers? Pakatan promised to spur sustainable and equitable economic growth and create a Malaysia that is inclusive, moderate and respected globally but it is not walking the talk.
“From here, we can see the importance of monitoring and checks and balances. MCA is shouldering this mission and we welcome more contribution and support to build a better Malaysia.
“MCA will have to create our own opposition spirit and attitude and build a strong sense of mission to highlight DAP’s nonsensical and ludicrous manners,” he added. - FMT
