NAJIB Razak has thrown his support behind the rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on Saturday and urged all Malaysians to support it.
The former prime minister hoped the rally at Dataran Merdeka will be peaceful.
“I hope this peaceful rally will keep to the law and let us not get emotional when we speak.
“Let us show them that we are a civil group and strong in our unity,” he said in Facebook post today.
Accompanying the post was a video promoting the rally.
The protest, led by opposition parties Umno and PAS, and Malay rights group Perkasa, will be held on Jalan Raja, opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad building and Dataran Merdeka from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday.
Right-wing Malay groups, including PAS and Umno leaders, have been pushing for the rally to go on despite Putrajaya backtracking on its pledge to ratify ICERD.
They claim that ratifying ICERD would erode Malay special privileges and the position of Islam as the country’s official religion.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also warned that Malays would run amok if the government ratified ICERD.
Only 14 countries, including Malaysia, North Korea, Brunei and Myanmar, have not ratified ICERD.
