A former Malacca chief minister is expected to announce his resignation from Umno at an event tomorrow morning.
According to Berita Harian, the former chief is known as Malacca's "Bapa pembangunan" (father of development).
This term is usually used to describe Mohd Ali Rustam, who was chief minister from 1999 to 2013.
Citing sources, Berita Harian reported the former state leader will also launch a movement dubbed 'Hijrah' that will encourage further defections from Umno nationwide.
"It is understood that many have joined him in this movement to pressure Umno, which is facing a leadership crisis," one source said.
This followed rumours that the 10th chief minister Idris Haron would quit Umno. However, he made no such move.
If the speculation on the former chief minister comes to pass, it would be the third time in a week that Umno has been hit with defections.
On Wednesday, Sabah Umno staged an exodus, while six MPs quit the party yesterday. - Mkini
