Yeo Bee Yin and Jamal Yunos.
KUALA LUMPUR: The lawsuit by Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin against Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos over allegations of abuse of Selangor Children’s Heritage Foundation (Yawas) funds will be settled amicably through mediation.
Yeo’s lawyer K Murali announced this to reporters after case management in High Court judge Nik Hasmat Nik Mohamad’s chambers today, It was also attended by lawyer Mohamad Fauzi Abdul Samad, representing Jamal.
Murali said the mediation process for both parties would be held on Dec 20 at the Mediation Centre in the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex here.
“Both parties agree to refer their dispute to an intermediary for the mediation process. If there is no settlement, the suit will be continued with a trial as fixed prior to this, from April 15 to 17,” he said.
On June 14 last year, Yeo, as plaintiff, filed the suit against Jamal demanding RM5 million in damages for issuing a slanderous statement on the alleged abuse of Yawas funds.
In her statement of claim, the Bakri MP said the defendant had issued a slanderous statement on March 21, 2017, which was published by several newspapers and news portals as well as on Jamal’s Facebook account.
She said the statement gave the impression that, among others, she had abused public funds for personal use and was someone without ethics who could not be trusted.
She also sought compensatory damages, aggravated damages and exemplary damages, as well as an injunction order prohibiting the defendant or his agents from repeating the statement. - FMT
