Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has expressed frustration at the unfolding saga over a sex video implicating Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, stating that it is consuming a huge amount of police time and resources.
“This whole thing is political. I have been urged from day one to verify the authenticity of the video. Now, after doing so, I am being accused of making political statements,” he was reported as saying.
The Malaysian public is less interested in the political struggles within PKR than the actual crime committed. Even if the IGP is now a progressive who defends the rights of the LGBT, there is still the question of whether a federal minister is involved in adultery and gay sex and thus susceptible to blackmail and compromise of the nation’s secrets.
The Profumo Affair in the UK is a reminder to the IGP of potential consequences.
The perpetrators of the secretly recorded video and its distribution is a separate matter that involves the invasion of privacy and the nation’s anti-pornography laws.
Are our police ‘half-past-six’?
We know the Malaysian police force can be very efficient when it wants to be. But in recent cases, such as the Teoh Beng Hock culpable homicide, the “enforced disappearances” of pastor Raymond Koh and Amri Che Mat, and the whereabouts of Indira Gandhi’s daughter, the police have proven to be worse than useless.
Now, in this sex video case, the police say that their facial recognition technology has failed to get a positive identification of the implicated minister.
It is not within the remit of the police to be concerned with the infighting within PKR. Nor is there any reason for the police to waste their time and resources to investigate such petty so-called “political” aspects of the case. As the IGP, Hamid should know both the boundaries of his police work and the related priorities.
What are the facts before us so far?
The former PKR Santubong Youth chief Haziq Aziz has claimed he was the man in the video and alleged his partner was Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president.
All the police need to do is investigate with state-of-the-art facial recognition technology whether Haziq is telling the truth. If we don’t have this technology, get some help from advanced countries. And if Haziq’s partner in the video is not the minister named, then say so.
