PETALING JAYA: Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said he is not a “pengkhianat” (traitor) and denied he was being disrespectful to party leaders.
He said he was only voicing out his views on certain issues that were decided by top leaders.
“I may have a different opinion but no one should ever doubt my loyalty to the party.
“I only speak what I think is the truth,” he said when officiating the Kota Melaka Umno meeting today.
Khairy previously said he was “not so happy where I am” after former prime minister Najib Razak was appointed as chief adviser to Barisan Nasional.
Another critic of Najib’s appointment was Nazri Aziz, Umno Supreme Council member.
Khairy today said that Umno leaders and members should embrace differences in views on current issues and there was no need to follow all decisions of top leaders.
“Differences in views do not show we are having disputes.
“If we are narrow-minded, Umno will be like what we were before.”
Khairy also said that Umno leaders should be fair to all BN coalition members, such as MCA and MIC, in forming ties with PAS for the next general election.
“We should not only think of winning (the general election) and sign lopsided agreements. The deal must be fair to both us and PAS.
“Also, Umno must not forget MCA and MIC, who were our first friends,” he said.
Khairy said although he had no position in Umno at present, he will still assist the party any way he could. He lost in the contest for Umno president last year to Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“We need to change in Umno and let the people see we have changed,” Khairy added. - FMT
