MACC to review 'case closed' files involving VVIPs: Latheefa

MACC chief Latheefa Koya today said she was aware of several controversial cases involving VVIPs, including those in Penang, and has requested for these files to be reviewed.
"I am looking through them to understand why they were closed. Was it really 'No Further Action' for the right reasons? I need some time to decide," she told reporters in Penang.
Latheefa did not identify the cases in particular but said she had a given instruction to have all the files whether the cases were in Selangor, Penang or Sarawak.
"Whichever cases involve public interest and VVIPs, I have summoned for these files and asked to review those things.
"It won't be too fast but I'm looking through it," she said.
Asked if she would be reviewing Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng's bungalow case, Latheefa said "no".
"It has gone through the court process. Unless we have new leads or evidence, we do not review cases which have been completed in court," Latheefa said.
"It does not make sense to open it again. Once it is completed, it is considered completed," she added.
"Unless you tell us there is some funny business in the courts, then we will probe".
On Sept 3 last year, Lim, the former Penang CM, was cleared of two graft charges in connection with the alleged status conversion of state land and the purchase of a bungalow at below market value.)
In Sarawak, Latheefa was urged to reopen investigations into Governor Abdul Taib Mahmud but said then the case was still under investigation.
Meanwhile, Latheefa today said two controversial projects in Penang would have to be scrutinised by Integrity Officers, who will be seconded from the MACC before they are approved.
The projects are the Penang Transport Master Plan and the Penang South Reclamation project both of which obtained have obtained federal approval subject to 72 conditions.
Latheefa said any project involving public funds would have to come under the scrutiny of Integrity Officers who were high-ranking MACC personnel.
"They do not stay long in a place as they have to rotate with other officers for other projects," she revealed.
"However, I have to check if these two projects have complied with this requirement. Usually, they would be requesting for the officers," she added.
"If they have not applied for one, we will send them a reminder. We will tell them we are sending an officer, so please tell us how you are going to accommodate her or him," said the MACC chief commissioner. - Mkini
