Main supplier of smoke-emitting candies from peninsula

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) director Georgie Abas believes the main supplier of the smoke-emitting candies is from Peninsular Malaysia.
This follows an operation in Petagas near here where KPDNHEP officers seized 224 “Ghost Smoke” sweets, worth RM112, today.
“The place was identified to have obtained its supply from a wholesaler in Kota Kinabalu. But the main supplier is from the peninsula.
“Of the 125 premises inspected since the operation started yesterday, this is the first to have been found selling these candies,” he said in a statement.
Georgie said KPDNHEP officers will continue to conduct checks to clamp down on the sale of candies which are popular with schoolchildren.
He warned that those caught selling the sweets could face a fine of RM100,000 or up to three years’ jail, or both, for the first offence.

Repeat offenders could be fined RM250,000 or face five years’ imprisonment, or both, he added.
He urged consumers to channel any information pertaining to the sale of such items by calling the various Sabah KPDNHEP district offices.
Sabah Health and Well-being Minister Frankie Poon said health officers yesterday confiscated 766 items of the “Ghost Candy” and “Smoke Candy” in towns across Sabah for labelling offences under the Food Act 1983.
It was reported that the candies were rampantly sold in Papar, Kota Kinabalu and other areas in Sabah. - FMT
