Numbers game continues - Pahang PKR latest to back Anwar amid rift

In the wake of PKR leaders endorsing a resolution to mend ties following a rift over a sex video scandal, declarations of support continue to pour in.
The latest comes from Pahang PKR, where 10 out of 14 division heads pledged their allegiance to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
A statement by the group, headed by Pahang PKR chief Fuziah Salleh, said the divisions which did not sign were Cabang Bera, Pekan, Bentong and Paya Besar.
Pahang is the fourth state after Penang, Perak and Johor to express its support for the president.
In Penang, which is Anwar's home state, 12 out of 13 division chiefs inked the pledge. Whereas in Perak, it was 22 out of 24 and Johor, 16 out of 23.
PKR division heads are elected, except in cases where there are pro-tem committees.
Tit-for-tat
The pledges signed by the four states were similar in content to a pledge signed by 22 national PKR leaders during a retreat in Port Dickson over the weekend, which deputy president Azmin Ali did not attend.
During the retreat, PKR leaders also supported the resolution to encourage reconciliation efforts.
There have been several shows of numbers since last week by Anwar and Azmin Ali's supporters in the wake of the sex video implicating the latter.
Azmin's supporters started the ball rolling on July 18 when a joint statement was issued by a group of PKR MPs and elected central leadership council (MPP) members.
The group had urged Anwar to stop making remarks that could divide the party, in reference to his suggestion that Azmin should step down if the sex scandal is proven true.
Previously, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said while the video was most likely authentic, the facial recognition process failed to link Azmin to the recording of two men in bed.
The police chief also disclosed that a political leader was behind the distribution of the video to tarnish the minister's reputation and hundreds of thousands of ringgit were spent on producing the recording.
Azmin, who is also economic affairs minister, has claimed that the video is an inside job aimed at ruining his political career.
Speculation is rife that the video is related to the tussle over the prime minister's post due to claims that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad prefers Azmin to succeed him, despite an agreement that the baton will be passed to Anwar.
Anwar, whose political secretary was among those detained in connection with the case, has denied involvement in the matter. - Mkini
