PAS Youth leader denies defaming Kok as ‘anti-Islam’

KUALA LUMPUR: A Selangor PAS Youth leader denied that he made a defamatory statement against Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok by labelling her “anti-Islam”.
Syarhan Humaizi Halim said his statement on Facebook about Kok was not done in bad faith.
“My statement on her was based on facts. It is well known that DAP was seen as threatening the people, especially the Muslims.
“I issued the statement in support of Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi’s speech during the Cameron Highlands by-election when he called on the voters to reject DAP’s Cameron Highlands candidate,” he said in a defence statement filed following Kok’s lawsuit against him.
Khalil is PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s son.
In his defence, Syarhan also said that Kok had previously objected to the tabling of Hadi’s private member’s bill, RUU355, to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
RUU355 was an attempt to increase the penalties for shariah offences.
“She and her fellow party leaders were vocal against RUU355 and constantly made statements about the bill,” he said.
Kok, who is DAP vice-chairperson, filed the suit against Syarhan in February.
She is seeking general and compensatory damages as well as an injunction to stop him from further publishing articles accusing her of being anti-Islam.

Kok’s lawyer Elyse Ng said her lawsuit will be heard from Sept 23 to 25 before High Court judge Firuz Jaffril. - FMT
