Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that the government will repeal the Sedition Act 1948 before replacing it with a new law.
“We will first repeal the act," he said when asked today about Pakatan Harapan’s intentions for the colonial-era law.
“And for the new act, we are in the process of fine-tuning some sentences.”
Mahathir stopped short of offering a time frame for the move, only saying that it would be done “as soon as possible.”
Harapan promised in its election manifesto to abolish the Sedition Act.
Muslim preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin’s sentence to one-year jail sentence for sedition earlier this week sparked a new wave of calls for the government to honour its pledge.
