Prison authorities should probe Wan Ji’s claim of assault, says Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says prison authorities should look into claims by preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin that he was physically assaulted while held at the Kajang prison.
“All of the claims need to be investigated, and I believe the home ministry will look into the matter too,” he told reporters at Parliament here today.
Adding that he had not experienced such assault in all his years at the Sungai Buloh prison, he said jail wardens should follow the rules and regulations.
Anwar was jailed for sodomy three years ago but walked free in May 2018 after receiving a royal pardon.
In a video released over the weekend, Wan Ji, who is head of PKR Youth’s religious bureau, said he was assaulted by a warden with a thick Kelantanese accent during the three days he was held at Kajang prison.
Wan Ji was sentenced to a year’s jail on July 9 on an appeal by the prosecution for an enhanced sentence and ordered to begin serving his term. He was released on July 12 after his lawyers filed for a stay of the sentence pending an appeal.
On a separate matter, Anwar said he had asked the government to review the compensation given to villagers affected by mega developments.
“It is time to reconsider the concept of development,” he said.
“We should give adequate compensation and allow them to participate in the development as well.”
The Port Dickson MP said although people are given affordable housing and compensation, this “does not solve their problems”.
He was commenting on the controversial RM16 billion Penang South Reclamation development project.
He said villagers should not simply be “kicked out” from their homes to make way for development.
“I strongly urge that the compensation plan be re-looked,” he said. - FMT
