SEMENYIH: Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said today that the sex video issue targeting Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali is “not good” for the country’s development.
Speaking to reporters after an event here, Hamid said the country had been bombarded with stories about the issue since Ramadan, to the point that even children were asking about it.
“At the same time, the police are burdened with our mission to clean our own house and the city’s streets of crime, but then our attention and resources are diverted to issues which shouldn’t arise in the first place.”
As the issue had come up, though, the police had to investigate, he added.
“If there was none then it would be good. We could focus on matters which are more important to the nation’s development.”
Six individuals, including former Santubong PKR Youth leader Haziq Aziz who claimed to be one of the individuals in the clips, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
Azmin, who was accused of being involved in homosexual acts, has strongly denied the allegations.
Hamid said the investigation is ongoing and that the police are looking at all aspects.
He said they are also in the final stages of updating the investigation paper into the alleged rape of an Indonesian domestic worker by Perak state executive councillor Paul Yong.
He said the investigation paper would be sent to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
“There will be no delay on the part of the police in completing this investigation,” he said after presenting medals to police officers at the General Operations Force camp here.
Yong was arrested after the domestic worker filed a report against him, claiming that she was sexually assaulted. He has denied the allegation.
The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code.
Speaking today, Hamid said he had also accepted the call by Umno’s Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin for the police to act on a report he lodged last year on the goods and services tax (GST) refunds.
“We will investigate the matter,” he added.
Khairy had lodged the report following claims by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng that the previous administration had stolen billions in GST refunds.
Yesterday, the Public Accounts Committee said in its report that no GST money had gone missing. - FMT
