PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak today responded to the police report filed by DAP’s RSN Rayer on the goods and services tax (GST) refunds issue, saying Umno’s Khairy Jamaluddin already lodged one last year.
“Sorry, you (Rayer) are a year late in lodging a report,” he said when asked to comment on the report filed yesterday.
He added that top cop Abdul Hamid Bador had said that police would look into the report lodged by Khairy, the Rembau MP.
In his report, Rayer had cited Attorney-General Tommy Thomas’ view that the move by the Najib-led administration to direct GST revenue into the Consolidated Revenue Account was a violation of Section 7 of the Financial Procedure Act 1957 and Section 54 of the GST Act 2014.
Najib previously said that Section 54 of the GST Act allowed the government to deposit the GST refunds into the consolidated fund instead of the GST Refund Account.
Speaking to FMT, the Pekan MP said Rayer should also look into the fact that the police have yet to decide on calling Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng for questioning on the matter.
Lim last year accused the Barisan Nasional administration of misusing RM19.4 billion meant for GST refunds.
“Why the one-year delay in questioning Lim?” Najib said.
“I think now that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has published its report, the police should question Lim on his allegation of robbery.”
He said Rayer should also recall that PAC had concluded that no GST funds were missing, as alleged, nor had it recommended that the police investigate any members of his administration for possible crimes.
He said this was unlike the royal commission of inquiry into Bank Negara Malaysia’s foreign currency dealings in the 1990s which had called for further investigation as public money was lost.
“But recently the PH-led government deemed no further action was needed on the matter.
“I would like to suggest that Rayer make a police report on the forex issue as well if he truly believes in the rule of law.” - FMT
