PETALING JAYA: PAS is demanding full investigations into the possibility that there are "backdoor" applications for citizenship for migrants in Sarawak with the support of DAP leaders.
PAS information chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad called on the authorities to set up a panel to carry out and in-depth investigation into the matter.
He said swift action must be taken if allegations of "dirty hands" being involved in securing citizenship proved to be true.
Kamaruzaman asked why the recently set up Backbenchers Citizenship Committe comprised only DAP leaders.
"If there is no hidden agenda, why is only DAP involved? This has raised suspicion because such matters should be openly discussed, and such a committee should comprise all the races," he said after Lanang MP Alice Lau announced on July 18 that the committee would be made up of 10 DAP MPs.
On July 23, Lau reportedly showed a pile of citizenship applications from Sibu, Sarawak.
A day earlier, Lau reportedly announced there would be a closed-door meeting with Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"It was revealed that DAP leaders, including Lim Guan Eng, M. Kulasegaran, Hannah Yeoh, Teo Nie Ching, and Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, participated in the discussion on citizenship issues.
Kamaruzan said the matter warranted immediate investigations to allay public fear of possible selective issuance of citizenship through closed-door negotiations.
PAS also called on the Home Ministry to reveal the points raised at the meeting.- Star
