Why shouldn't Federal Govt fund LRT project, asks Chow

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has asked why the Federal Government shouldn't fund the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system project for Penang.
"All rail projects in Malaysia, especially in Klang Valley, are funded by the Federal Government.
"Penang LRT is the only one outside the Klang Valley, and could be funded with federal funds," said Chow after officiating and event at the Penang Science Cluster here on Thursday (July 25).
"We will prepare the necessary application on this, and hope it will be considered under the 12th Malaysia Plan."
When asked if the state would seek private funding or loans, Chow said it could be done, but the loans have to be paid back.
"The LRT is not a small project, as it cost more than RM10bil.
The state received a conditional approval for the Bayan Lepas LRT project from the Transport Ministry on July 18.
On Penang South Reclamation, Chow reiterated that the reclamation was not only to fund the Penang Transport Master Plan, but the lands created would be of utmost importance for the future development of the state.- Star
