Umno, BN won’t work with those who ‘conspire’ with DAP, says Zahid

Umno president and BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said neither the party nor Barisan Nasional (BN) will work together with any party that is hand-in-hand with DAP, following Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call for Malays, including those from Umno, to join PPBM.
Zahid, who is also BN chairman, said DAP’s “Malaysian Malaysia” agenda could not be accepted.
“Umno and BN cannot accept any party or leader that conspires with DAP,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here.
“That is the official stance of Umno and BN.”
On Friday, Mahathir, the PPBM chairman, invited all Malay-based parties, including Umno, to join PPBM in efforts to unite the Malays.
He said he found more and more Malay parties were being formed, which reduced the potential of the Malay parties to win the elections.
Zahid said Mahathir’s suggestion could not be accepted because of the country’s multiracial composition.
“Umno and BN are always open minded to accept the political reality in whatever political situation,” the Bagan Datuk MP said.
“But this open invitation cannot be accepted by Umno and BN in order to protect peace, Islam and the Malays.
“If DAP continues to ‘control’ the current government, this (proposal) will not be accepted.”
Zahid’s statement contradicted that of former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein, who said earlier that Umno and PAS should not be “arrogant” when responding to Mahathir’s call.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim also said he would seek Mahathir’s clarification on the matter during the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting to be held later today.
Amanah has, meanwhile, welcomed the prime minister’s invitation to Malay-based parties to join PPBM, saying it “makes sense”. - FMT
