Police retract statement seeking Kim Jong-nam’s next-of-kin

Police have retracted its statement sent out two days ago seeking the next-of-kin of assassinated North Korean heir apparent Kim Jong-nam to come forward and claim his personal effects.

In a short message to the media today, the Sepang district police headquarters said they received the order from the Bukit Aman Special Branch.

"Bukit Aman Special Branch has ordered for the media statement issued on Oct 4 to be withdrawn and cancelled for some reasons.

"We seek your cooperation on this matter. Apologies for the inconvenience caused. Thank you," it said.

When queried on the reasons, Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said it was due to "issues between two countries", without elaborating further.

On Tuesday, the district police sent out a statement seeking the next-of-kin of a North Korean named "Kim Chol", a 52-year-old man from Pyongyang with passport number 836410070.

It stated that the next-of-kin is urged to contact the investigating officer, and should no family members come forward within six months from the date of the statement, all the deceased's personal effects would be handed over to Malaysia's Treasury.

Assassination

Jong-nam (above), the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was assassinated in Malaysia on Feb 13, 2017.

He was reportedly travelling using a passport bearing the name Kim Chol, and entered the country on Feb 6. Jong-nam was about to leave Malaysia when he was set upon by two women armed with the VX nerve agent at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The incident sparked tension between Malaysia and North Korea, resulting in the countries severing diplomatic ties. - Mkini
