PETALING JAYA: At least seven areas in Langkawi were hit by floods this morning, according to the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM).
Among the affected areas were Kampung Teluk Yu, Kampung Kilim and Kampung Telaga Ayer Hangat in Ayer Hangat; Kampung Belanga Pecah in Kuah; Bukit Kemboja and Sungai Melaka in Padang Matsirat; and Empangan Padang Saga in Ulu Melaka.
Bernama reported that at least 44 hikers and three guides were trapped at Telaga Tujuh since this morning. They could not cross a river because of the strong current and contacted the fire and rescue department. The rescue operation was completed at 4pm.
As of 4pm, APM reported heavy rain and strong winds in Langkawi. More villages have been inundated with floodwaters. Among them were Kampung Padang Lalang and Kampung Pasir Hitam.
Landslides were reported in Ulu Melaka and Jalan Gunung Raya, while trees were uprooted in several areas in the districts of Ulu Melaka, Ayer Hangat, Kuah and Bohor.
Earlier, flash floods hit several areas in Penang and Perlis.
Meanwhile, in Kangar, six houses in Kampung Sentua were affected by a flash flood following a heavy downpour since yesterday.
Perlis APM director Izaimi Md Daud said his personnel had been instructed to observe the situation and provide aid to victims.
“From our observation, the water level in four areas, namely, Kampung Seriab, Kampung Sentua, Kampung Bakau and Taman Kuala Perlis, has risen to the ankle level. However, no temporary relief centres have been opened,” he told Bernama today. - FMT
