PETALING JAYA: The education ministry’s letter to a teacher, threatening dismissal or demotion for raising concerns over the mathematics syllabus in primary schools has come under criticism from the opposition.

Amanah’s Hasan Bahrom, who leads the party’s education bureau, said if action is taken against Fadli Salleh, it would not reflect the harmonious environment between policymakers and teachers.

“The education ministry should take cikgu Fadli’s feedback seriously and understand the issue because it affects the teaching and learning process,” he said.

Hasan, who was Tampin MP until the dissolution of Parliament, said the education ministry should encourage all parties to provide feedback to show that it wants to have an education system that is mature, harmonious and progressive.

He added that the ministry should not be an institution that stifles the freedom to provide views and opinions.

“We urge the ministry not to take action against Fadli,” he said, saying the teacher had been brave and honest in his comments.

Fadli, a mathematics teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan (1) Gombak, is facing possible dismissal or demotion after he repeatedly raised concerns over the primary school mathematics syllabus being too advanced for students.

Taking to social media, Fadli complained that there was not enough time to cover the entire syllabus because it was too dense and there were too many subjects for students to learn, apart from classrooms being too packed. - FMT
