GEORGE TOWN: Scores of houses in several areas on the island were hit by flash floods following heavy rain which started at 10pm yesterday.

State environment and welfare committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said he received information that houses in Batu Maung, Bayan Lepas and George Town were flooded but that there was no need for evacuation.

“Based on the information received, most of the houses were flooded with water levels reaching 30-50cm. We are monitoring and providing assistance to the affected residents.

“As of 10am today, the floodwaters in most of the areas have receded and we are lucky because all the pump houses in the affected areas are operating smoothly,” he said when contacted here today.

Phee said the state government was also monitoring all locations that are prone to flash floods.

Meanwhile, a resident of Kampung Naran in Batu Maung, Razak Abdul Hashim, 42, said it rained heavily for two hours from 10pm last night but the water only began to rise after a second bout of heavy rain at about 3.30am today.

“After my wife and I realised water had entered our house, we quickly moved all the electrical items to a safer place. The water rose rapidly but had receded by 9am today,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Kangar, three areas were hit by flash floods following heavy rain.

According to a Perlis Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesman, the areas affected were Kampung Sentua, Kampung Seriab and Kampung Bakau.

“The Perlis APM is monitoring the hotspot areas and rivers in the state,” he said when contacted today.

He urged those with information or in need of assistance to contact the Perlis APM at 04-9777991/04-9778991, or its disaster management operations room at 04-9760991.

A check by Bernama at Titi Chai, Kangar, found residents making preparations to face flash floods, with some starting to move their household items to higher places.

However, no flood relief centres have been opened yet. - FMT
