PONTIAN: The move by 12 Perikatan Nasional ministers sending a letter to the King expressing their disagreement over the holding of the 15th General Election this year has eroded the Cabinet's legitimacy.

Umno secretary general Datuk Ahmad Maslan said the move shows that there is a distrust over what the Prime Minister wants to do.

"The PM (Prime Minister) has the discretion, so he would definitely have thought about presenting a date (for the election) to the King. The King may accept the advice.

"For me, this should not have happened because as ministers, they could have discussed their disagreement in the Cabinet," said Ahmad.

He said the move had also eroded the legitimacy of the Cabinet.

"If the legitimacy was 100 per cent before, now it is only 60 per cent. 40 per cent of the legitimacy was lost," said Ahmad.

He was speaking to the media before the Pontian Puteri Umno meeting, which was officiated by Johor Umno, liaison chief Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad.

On Thursday, Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin confirmed that PN ministers have sent a letter to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah stating their objection to the general election to be called so soon.

Radzi said their letter that was sent on Wednesday urged the King not to consider having the GE15 in the nearest time if the proposal to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat was presented to him. - NST
