PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claims Bersatu co-founder Rais Hussin left the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party as he knows it does not have a future.
Zahid said the former Bersatu Supreme Council member could foresee the party’s future in politics as its former chief strategist and would have stayed on if it really did have a good future.
However, he said, regular members of Bersatu do not have the same awareness and continue to believe that the party could win the elections.
“Whatever it is, the fact that a strategist and one of the co-founders of the party has left is a big slap in the face for Bersatu,” he said in a Facebook post.
Last Friday, Rais announced his departure from the party he co-founded in 2015 after handing in his resignation letter the day before.
He said he had not been active in the party since 2020 following a heart procedure, and also due to his focus on developing the EMIR Research think tank.
Rais was appointed to the Bersatu Supreme Council in 2016 but stayed out of the party elections in 2020.
Zahid congratulated Rais for leaving the party and for being “wise” in distinguishing which party will stay relevant after the next general election (GE15).
He asked other regular Bersatu members when they planned to quit the party, telling them it would be too late to do so after GE15. - FMT
