BUTTERWORTH: Penang Umno expects to contest more seats in Penang at the coming general election, the party’s state leader Musa Sheikh Fadzir said today.
Musa said seats that were formerly contested by Gerakan in the 2018 general election would now be distributed among Barisan Nasional (BN) member parties.
Gerakan left BN in June 2018 after the coalition lost power. It had contested 13 state assembly seats and four parliamentary seats in Penang, but lost in all.
“A decision on the seats contested by Gerakan will be made by the BN leadership, and I hope Umno will be allowed to contest more seats in Penang,” Musa said.
In 2018, Umno had contested 15 state and five parliamentary seats. It won two state seats and two parliamentary seats. Its partners MCA and MIC lost all their contests.
There are 40 seats in the Penang legislative assembly, and 13 parliamentary seats.
Selangor Umno readies candidate list
Selangor Umno is to hand over a list of prospective election candidates from all its 22 divisions to the party leadership very soon, state party chief Noh Omar said.
There would be five names for each parliamentary and state constituency, with some divisions submitting six names, including the current MP or assemblyman.
He said Selangor Umno will launch its election machinery at the divisional and branch level soon.
Noh said he would leave it to the party’s top leadership on whether Umno (and Barisan Nasional) should cooperate with other parties for the general election. - FMT
