PN is opposing early polls, not pulling support for PM, says Hamzah

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) decision to oppose the dissolution of Parliament this year does not mean the coalition is withdrawing support for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, a PN leader said.

The issues of dissolving Parliament and supporting Ismail were different matters, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin told reporters after a Bersatu Supreme Council meeting last night.

Hamzah said this when asked if the letter from PN’s 12 Cabinet members to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong urging that GE15 not be held this year meant that the coalition was withdrawing its support for the prime minister.

Previously, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki questioned whether the letter could be considered as a loss of confidence in Ismail. According to him, based on Clause 4, Article 43 of the Federal Constitution, a prime minister who had lost the confidence of the majority could advise the King to dissolve Parliament or resign.

Hamzah said the decision reached by the 12 PN ministers was based on the consensus of the coalition’s component parties. He said the ministers had followed their parties’ decision.

Yesterday, Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin confirmed that the 12 ministers wrote a letter to the King, stating their stand against holding GE15 this year. He said they felt the focus should be on the people’s welfare at this time. - FMT
