Warisan eyes 26 parliamentary seats in Peninsular

Warisan will field 26 parliamentary candidates in Peninsular Malaysia.

Its top recruit is former MCA president Ong Tee Keat, who is the party's candidate for Pandan, which he has represented for two terms.

Other notable candidates include former DAP and Gerakan member Jeff Ooi, who was a two-term MP for Jelutong. Ooi will be vying for Bayan Baru.

Former Umno member and Alor Mengkudu assemblyperson Fadzil Hanafi will be Warisan's candidate for Alor Setar.

Former Wangsa Maju and Bukit Bintang MP Wee Choo Keong, who has spent time in PKR and DAP, will be Warisan's candidate for Wangsa Maju.

Warisan’s candidate for Batu Kawan Ong Chin Wen

Former Bukit Tengah assemblyperson Ong Chin Wen will be vying for Batu Kawan.

Incumbent Teratai assemblyperson Bryan Lai Wai Chong will be vying for Ampang. Lai quit DAP in April 2021 over "personal issues".

The two candidates that will be fielded in Perlis are Ko Chu Liang (Padang Besar) and Rohimi Shapiee (Kangar).

Besides Alor Setar, Warisan will also contest in the Kedah seats of Pokok Sena, Kuala Kedah, Merbok and Padang Serai. In Penang, the Sabah-based party is also set to stand in Tasek Gelugor and Jelutong.

Warisan will field candidates in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Sekijang in Johor and Tumpat in Kelantan as well.

In Selangor, Warisan will also contest in Hulu Langat and Klang. Other seats targeted by Warisan include Kepong and Batu in Kuala Lumpur.

Warisan will also field nine candidates for the 15-seat Perlis legislative assembly and seven candidates for the 59-seat Perak legislative assembly.

Warisan president Shafie Apdal said his party may put forward more candidates.

"Today I announced candidates for 26 parliamentary seats and 16 state seats. The candidates comprise leaders, consultants, former ministers and former party presidents.

"However, there are a few seats still under evaluation, to determine if we need to field candidates," he told a press conference.

Ong will face Rafizi for Pandan

Meanwhile, Ong, who officially registered as a Warisan member today, said the country needs a new political culture and model of governance which is not based on race and religion.

"I chose Warisan because of this need, otherwise Malaysia will not be able to get rid of such predicaments," he added.

Ong appeared unfazed by the tough fight in Pandan which will be contested by a heavyweight opponent - Rafizi Ramli.

"Heavyweight or not, that's not my main consideration. In each and every election I’ve contested, my concern is whether or not I give my best effort. I welcome the announcement of his (Rafizi) candidature, I hope this is going to be a gentlemen’s contest.

"I think it is too premature, if not arrogant, to say if we can defeat somebody before the nomination day. I think we will gauge the situation after that," he said.

Ong joined MCA in 1981 and later became party president and transport minister. He was credited for exposing corruption in the allocation for Chinese schools and the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.

He served as Ampang Jaya MP for five terms from 1989 to 2013. The constituency was renamed Pandan thereafter.

However, he quietly quit the party in 2017 and refused to give his reasons for doing so. - Mkini
