PETALING JAYA: Political veteran Lim Kit Siang has urged his contemporaries, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, to sit out the general election and make way for younger candidates.
Lim, 81, said it was time the younger generation played a role in realising what he called “Malaysia’s dream of becoming a world class plural society”, Berita Harian reported.
The DAP stalwart, who has retired from active politics after 10 terms as MP, said the country had “lost track” and needs a realignment according to the principles set by the nation’s founding fathers.
“Otherwise we would be left behind the likes of Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam in terms of economic growth. Unless we rise again, Malaysia will continue to lag behind,” he was quoted as saying.
Mahathir, 97, and Tengku Razaleigh, 85, better known as Ku Li, are expected to seek re-election in Langkawi and Gua Musang respectively.
Mahathir has also served 10 terms in Parliament since 1964, while Tengku Razaleigh is Malaysia’s longest-serving MP, having been an MP for 12 terms consecutively since 1974. - FMT
