MIC to decide on contesting GE15 tomorrow, says Vigneswaran

MIC president SA Vigneswaran said the party will also decide if it will accept or reject the seats it was offered.

PETALING JAYA: MIC leaders will meet tomorrow to decide if the party is contesting in the coming general election, says its president SA Vigneswaran.

This comes amid reports that the party was mulling sitting out the coming general election (GE15).

According to a report by The Malaysian Insight, Vigneswaran said an emergency meeting would be held tomorrow to decide if MIC would accept or reject the seats offered to it or stay out of GE15.

Vigneswaran was quoted as saying he did not want the party to be drawn further into the matter. He also said no MIC leaders would attend tonight’s gathering to unveil BN candidates.

It is understood that MIC is unhappy over the allocation of seats for the party. In the last general election, MIC contested nine seats and won the Tapah and Cameron Highlands seats.

However, a by-election was called in Cameron Highlands in 2019 after the election court annulled the victory of BN’s candidate, MIC’s C Sivarraajh, for alleged vote buying.

BN fielded Ramli Md Noor as a direct-BN candidate in the by-election, and he went on to win and become the country’s first Orang Asli MP. Ramli has since joined Umno. - FMT
