Perlis Pakatan Harapan will field a university student to contest in the state seat of Tambun Tulang - a BN stronghold in the parliamentary constituency of Arau in Perlis for the 15th general election (GE15).
Muhammad Syahmi Suhaimi (above), 23, who is a civil engineering student at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap), is thus far the youngest election candidate in the upcoming polls and will represent PKR.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of PKR's candidates' announcement event for Perlis today, state Harapan chairperson Noor Amin Ahmad said that his party aims to become the "king maker', and will gun for a simple majority to form the state government after GE15.
"Like all parties contesting here, we will also aim for victory. Perlis is not an easy state (to win), we learn from the previous election and we know it's a BN fortress.
"But I believe that the political dynamics are always changing and we have a chance to win - be it a definite victory with eight (state) seats, or with enough seats to become a 'king maker'," Amin (above) said.
In the event attended by Perlis PKR chairperson Nurul Izzah Anwar, the party also announced nine candidates to represent PKR out of a total of 15 state seats.
Six new faces
This is an additional four state seats, compared to the five seats contested by PKR in the 2018 general election.
Out of the nine candidates announced today, six are new faces, while three are incumbents, namely Nor Azam Karap (Kuala Perlis), Gan Ay Ling (Indera Kayangan) and Asrul Nizan Abd Jalil (Sena).
Aside from Syahmi (Tambun Tulang), the remaining five new faces are Natthavuth A/L Seng (Chuping), Amran Kamarudin (Mata Ayer), Azhar Ameir (Pauh), Hasparizal Hassan (Guar Sanji) and Amran Darus (Simpang Empat).
As for the seats, the remaining six seats are contested by Amanah (five), and DAP (one). - Mkini
