PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has called on the home ministry to act swiftly on claims by a teenager that she was raped by a police inspector.

Syerleena Rashid said it was a serious allegation amid a flurry of complaints against the police for alleged power abuse.

“The police must realise they are not immune from legal action and they cannot do whatever they want and get away with it. The home ministry cannot continue to be slow in taking action and it must defend the common people’s interest,” the Bukit Bendera MP said in a statement.

“I also urge the ministry to not be negligent in ensuring the police are aware of the rule of law.”

Syerleena hoped that the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission would be enforced so that a probe into power abuse could be carried out.

Last Wednesday, a 16-year-old girl claimed that an investigating officer in his 30s had raped her in an office of a district police headquarters in Kedah.

According to Harian Metro, the victim had been called in by the inspector to assist in a probe into a separate rape case that involved the girl and her stepfather. - FMT
