After Hamzah says 'door open', Kit Siang wants it shut

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government should have zero tolerance for toxic politics to prevent political rivals from inflicting damage, said Lim Kit Siang.

He claimed that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who insists that the predominantly-Chinese DAP posed a threat to the Malays and Islam, topped the list of those peddling falsehoods.

Hence, the DAP veteran suggested that a non-compromising stand would shut the door on those seeking to destabilise the current administration.

He was responding to Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin who remarked that the “door is always open” when not ruling out the prospect of Perikatan Nasional returning to power with new allies.

However, the former home minister, whose nascent coalition is no stranger to toppling governments through political coups, did not make it clear if he was referring to the “front or rear entrance” to the seat of power.

Describing the statement as a “sombre reminder”, Lim (above) said: “Anwar’s unity government should have zero tolerance for toxic politics of lies, fear, hate, race and religion which are not only based on falsehoods but could destroy not only Anwar’s government and plural Malaysia as well.”

He also called on the government to devise a plan to prove Hamzah wrong in the coming “mini general election” and thwart the so-called “green tide”.

This was in reference to the six states which must hold their respective polls before June.

“Hamzah must be proved wrong that PN can capture Selangor and that PN has a 50-50 chance to capture Negeri Sembilan.

“The government must work out a strategy in the six state elections that will send out the message that there is no such thing as an irresistible ‘green tide’ phenomenon in Malaysian politics.

“On the contrary, the results should point to strengthening the likelihood that the Anwar government can last five years,” he added in a statement this afternoon.

Lim also claimed that under PN’s rule, the nation would be destined to become a “divided, failed and a kleptocratic state.”

“A PN government would not be concerned about bolstering the nation’s economy or restoring Malaysia as a world-class plural nation in education, health, social or environmental terms

“This was why the first PN government under (its chairperson) Muhyiddin Yassin was such a dismal failure in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“And despite his violation of the Federal Constitution in unconstitutionally suspending Parliament in January 2021 to deal with Covid-19, ending the six-month suspension of Parliament with ten times more Covid-19 cases and 24 times more Covid-19 deaths in cumulative total for these two figures than at the start of the suspension of Parliament,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hamzah also indicated that the bridge between PN and BN had not been gutted after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi chose to collaborate with Anwar instead of Muhyiddin after the last general election resulted in a political deadlock.

Certain Umno and BN leaders such as Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Hishammuddin Hussein were opposed to working with Pakatan Harapan.

Hamzah’s remarks come amid claims of a plot in the making, dubbed the “London Move”, to oust the new government.

However, Ismail Sabri denied being involved, claiming that he was vacationing with his family in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. - Mkini
