Ahmad Maslan, lawyers to meet ROS over Umno's no-contest resolution

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan intends to meet the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to address the no-contest resolution for the party's top two positions that was approved at the Umno general assembly last weekend.

He said the party's attorneys will be present at the meeting to explain how the controversial motion's proposal and tabling processes were carried out in compliance with Umno's constitution.

The Pontian MP claimed that Umno's lawyers had already clarified that party permanent chairperson Badruddin Amiruldin had approved the motion proposal in accordance with Clause 21.1 of the assembly's regulations, which was within his authority.

Ahmad (above) added that the motion had been given some time for discussion before the voting.

“If the delegates did not agree, they could have stood up to express their disagreement.

“It can be said that more than 90 percent of the delegates expressed their agreement by raising their hands and even standing. There were only a few dozen delegates who raised their hands or stood up to express their disapproval.

“Therefore, this became a decision that was reached at the general assembly. Therefore, it is an order, or party policy, that all Umno members must abide by,” he told FMT.

Ahmad refrained from commenting on whether the two Umno members' complaint to the ROS was in compliance with party norms.

Conflicting reactions to motion

On Jan 14, the Umno general assembly passed a resolution to not have the party’s top two positions open for contest in its upcoming internal election.

The motion was proposed by Rembau delegate Mohd Shukri Samsudin on Jan 13, who submitted it as a supplementary motion while debating the president’s policy speech.

Although many stood up in support of it, the proposal caused unease among some delegates.

Yesterday, two Umno members filed a notice of objection to the ROS over the matter.

Muhammad Aizat Fikri Mohd Nasir and Muhammad Fiqri Firdaus Muhammad Rom claimed that the passed resolution is invalid and contravenes the party constitution.

They cited Clause 9.3 of the party’s constitution, which states that the party president and deputy president must be elected through a divisional representative assembly every three years.

A notable opponent to the motion was former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin who commended Aizat and Fiqri for their objection. - Mkini
