The children’s commission should be given broad jurisdiction and a clear mandate in ensuring the protection of children’s best interests, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) said.
In a statement, Suhakam chairperson Rahmat Mohamad (above) said it is imperative to provide sufficient allocations and manpower for the commission to carry out its duties.
“Suhakam hopes that the newly established commission will be able to deal with issues related to children, including aspects of survival, protection, development and participation of children.
“Therefore, adequate allocations and human resources are vital for the commission to carry out the responsibilities and mandate given,” Rahmat said.
Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Wednesday that the cabinet had agreed to appoint a commissioner for children under Suhakam to deal with cases of abuse and social problems related to children.
Rahmat commended this move, stating that the establishment of this commission was a step in the right direction with Malaysia's position as a state party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
“The establishment of the commission is a positive step towards preserving the dignified life of children, in line with the principles of Malaysia Madani as highlighted by the prime minister,” he said. - Mkini
