Umno must change to stay relevant, said party veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, or risk worse rejection in future elections.
According to the former Gua Musang MP, who is also known as Ku Li, Umno should consider disbanding the party if it loses badly in the upcoming six state elections.
“There must be a change in Umno. If not, Umno will not be able to face the state elections and it will lose badly.
“If the party continues to be rejected by the rakyat, then might as well just disband it,” he said, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.
In the general election last November, Umno recorded its worst performance ever after the party only managed to secure 26 parliamentary seats.
Other BN component parties won four more seats, resulting in the coalition having 30 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.
It was the second and most humiliating defeat faced by Umno since it first lost power in the 2018 general election.
Umno will face another series of tests in the next few months when the party faces six state elections, which have to be held by May.
Ku Li told the Malay daily it is now up to the Umno leadership whether they want to focus on securing their positions for the upcoming party election or work towards bringing back the people’s support to the party. - Mkini
