Don't hide, disclose candidacy at AGM - Isham to top posts contenders

Umno information chief Isham Jalil has urged those who want to contest for the president and deputy president posts “not to hide”.

He called on the aspirants to announce their intention during the ongoing party general assembly.

“The earlier, the better,” he said.

Isham (above) assured that there are no plans to prevent a contest for the top positions as alleged by certain quarters.

“We will not stop anyone from contesting. We have no intention of amending the constitution to stop a contest (from taking place).

“Certain quarters are claiming that we will not allow a contest. No, we will not stop anyone,” he told a press conference at the sidelines of the Umno annual meet in Kuala Lumpur.

Isham’s remarks came following a report that some 140 Umno division leaders have called for the president and deputy president posts to be uncontested to avoid a split ahead of the upcoming elections in six states.

On the call from the heads of Umno wings for “traitors” to be removed, Isham said the party would take action against errant members.

“There are processes to undergo before taking disciplinary action in such cases. We have to investigate first before making a decision,” he added.

Earlier today, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki called for “traitors” who had backed Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin during the political stalemate after the 15th general election to be booted before they cause more damage.

His call was echoed by Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad and Umno Puteri chief Zahida Zarik Khan, who likened such leaders to “cancer” which can destroy the party from within if not removed in time.

St Regis Move

Yesterday, Malaysiakini quoted a source claiming that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in his presidential briefing, revealed how certain leaders conspired with Muhyiddin to remove him as the BN chairperson in what has been dubbed the “St Regis Move”.

The president also disclosed that 10 Umno MPs inked a statutory declaration supporting the PN chairperson as prime minister.

The source said Zahid told the closed-door briefing that when BN held a meeting during the political crisis, only 26 BN MPs turned up while four who backed Muhyiddin did not attend, citing health reasons.

“The president informed us there was a plan to remove him as BN chairperson during the supreme council meeting. Muhyiddin was waiting at the St Regis Hotel (in Kuala Lumpur) to get the support (of BN MPs) if the move against Zahid was successful,” the source added. - Mkini
