PETALING JAYA: Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil has asked Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) to clarify a statement that the country’s 5G network currently covers 50% of populated areas.
In a Twitter post, Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has yet to verify the information.
“I think DNB must explain how they arrived at these figures,” he said.
“Next time, I don’t think DNB should publish (the figures) prior to verification.”
He was responding to a tweet by political analyst James Chin, who uploaded a screenshot of a news article in which DNB CEO Nasution Mohamed said the 5G network rollout in the country has reached almost 50% in populated areas as of the end-2022, surpassing its initial target of 40%.
“The media must stop printing fake news,” said Chin, a professor of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania.
“I cannot even get 4G (signal) in a town in Sarawak. (I) bought a 4G data card and the speed is like 3G or less.”
In a statement on Sunday, DNB said it has achieved more than 90% coverage of populated areas throughout Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor as well as some 50% across cities and towns in Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.
It said all other states are in various stages of deployment and it is focused on achieving its next target of covering 80% of populated areas by the end of 2024, if not sooner.
DNB, which is 100% owned by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (Mof Inc), is responsible for building and managing the 5G network and acts as the single wholesale provider of 5G services. - FMT
